Orchidea
Y3 | Workgroup Summary
13 July 2021
09:30-11:00 EDT
Via Zoom
Workgroup Leaders:
C. Cella (University of California Berkeley)
Aims:
The aim of the first part of this workshop was to present the latest research and applications of Orchidea, a computer-assisted orchestration software, and OOQ: Orchidea Orchestral Qualities, a new Max/MSP externals package. This is to be released as part of the next update. The second part of this workshop was dedicated to a round-table discussion on research problems, future steps and conclusions. Some of the discussed topics were end-to-end approaches, source separation for orchestration, morphologies and integration of perceptual features and documentation and user experience.
Discussion Points:
1. Overview: What is Orchidea?
2. Source separation and the orchestration problem. What kind of parameters are involved in separating the sources?
3. “If we have a proof that the orchestration problem is NP-complete, if we find a polynomial-time algorithm for it, we become immensely rich.”
4. Overview: Orchidea Orchestral Qualities Suite
5. Open Discussion
a. This would also be interesting for other perceptual descriptors of different gestures: pitch bend up, accelerating vibrato, sharp crescendo – compared with what is possible on the instruments (this would need a very big database of instrumental possibilities).
b. Orchidea Orchestral Qualities Suite would probably be an interesting pedagogical tool.
c. OrchView developers have been working on a set of tools to deal with timbral morphology, i.e., different types of attack, resonance, and sustain. The application of these tools may be exploited for improving Orchidea search space.
Action Items:
1. Use annonations done with timbral morphology tools as reference to enrich Orchidea search space.
2. Coordinate with CORE, adding new databases or new ways to use Orchidea.
3. Find Funding for Orchidea Standalone
Follow-Up:
· How can we connect Orchidea and the research in ACTOR, especially for the perceptual features?
· Idea of morphologies and how we can integrate these perceptual features into this idea grounding on the research by the ACTOR project.
· Idea of perception in orchestration and how we can support that in Orchidea?
· Which are the important morphologies to support in such a project?
· Prepare new definition of “orchestration,” one that is note-base and sound-based.
· Many suggestions were raised to improve and evolve the pedagogical aspects of Orchidea
